<p>Mini FM transmitters take place as one of the standard circuit types in an amateur electronics fan’s beginning steps. When done right, they provide very clear wireless sound transmission through an ordinary FM radio over a remarkable distance. I’ve seen lots of designs through the years, some of them were so simple, some of them were powerful, some of them were hard to build etc.<span id="more-164"></span></p>
<p>Here is the last step of this evolution, the most stable, smallest, problemless, and energy saving champion of this race. Circuit given below will serve as a durable and versatile FM transmitter till you break or crush it’s PCB. Frequency is determined by a parallel L-C resonance circuit and shifts very slow as battery drains out.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">This miniature transmitter is easy to construct and it&#8217;s transmissions can be picked up on any standard FM radio. It has a range of up to 1/4-mile (400 meters) or more, depending on the line-of-sight, obstructions by large buildings, etc. It is great for room monitoring, baby listening, nature research, etc.<br />
L1 is 8 to 10 turns of 22 gauge hookup wire close wound around a non-conductive 1/4-inch diamter form, such as a pencil.<br />
C4 is a small, screw-adjustable, trimmer capacitor.<span id="more-134"></span><br />
Set your FM radio for a clear, black space in the lower end of the band (88MHz). Then, with a non-metallic/non-conductive trimmer tool, adjust this capacitor for the clearest reception. A little experimenting and patience may be in order.<br />
Most of the parts values are not critical, so you can try adjusting them to see what happens.<br />
If you decide to substitute transistors with something similar you already have, it maybe necessary adjust the collector voltage of Q1 by changing the value of R2 or R3 (because you change transistors, it changes this bias on the base of Q1). It should be about 1/2 the supply voltage (about 4 or 5v).</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The circuit uses two 2N3819 FET&#8217;s in cascode configuration.  The lower FET operates in common source mode, while the upper FET, operates in common gate, realising full high frequency gain. The bottom FET is tunable allowing a peak for a particular station. Coil details follow:</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">L1   4 turns of 18swg  air spaced with a 1cm diameter, the tap is one turn up from earth end&#8230;<br />
L2   4 turns of 18swg air spaced with 1 cm diameter. The coupling coil is 1 turn interwound from the supply end. Enamel coated wire must be used.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">This small transmitter uses a hartley type oscillator. Normally the capacitor in the tank circuit would connect at the base of the transistor, but at VHF the base emitter capacitance of the transistor acts as a short circuit, so in effect, it still is. The coil is four turns of 18swg wire wound around a quarter inch former. The aerial tap is about one and a half turns from the supply end. Audio sensitivity is very good when used with an ECM type microphone insert.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p align="justify">Here is a  two-transistor Wien bridge oscillator using an ordinary night-light bulb for  stabilization. The output is about 6 volts p-p and can drive fixed loads as low  as 2 or 3 thousand ohms without additional buffering. A 10 k amplitude  potentiometer with the wiper going to a high input impedance output amplifier  would make an excellent load.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.rangkaian-elektronika.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/wienbridge.gif" title="Wien Bridge Oscillator"><img src="http://www.rangkaian-elektronika.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/wienbridge.gif" alt="Wien Bridge Oscillator" height="350" width="450" /></a></p>
<p align="justify">Excellent distortion  is achieved by adjusting the 1 k feedback potentiometer until the output  amplitude is about a volt less than the maximum level (with the pot set to the  highest resistance). Wait a few seconds between adjustments to give the bulb  time to stabilize; the audio signal actually heats the bulb&#8217;s filament causing  the resistance to go up which controls the loop gain. You will see the signal  bounce a little as the bulb gains control. This simple version of the popular  Wien bridge oscillator uses feedback to hold the junction of the two RC networks  (base of first transistor) near zero volts (100 mV p-p) and the ends of the RC  networks move in opposite directions like a see-saw.</p>
<p align="justify"><span id="more-92"></span>With the resistor  values shown, the frequency may be varied from a few Hz to over 60 kHz by  selecting a value for C between 1 uF and 47 pF. The frequency will be reasonably  close to 1/ (6.28 x RC). R may be varied also for additional range but values  too low or high may cause problems. The 7-watt bulb may be replaced by a smaller  type with similar resistance (more than 50 ohms) but the long time constant of  the larger filament is helpful when generating very low frequencies.</p>
<li>The 100 uF output  capacitor may be smaller if very low frequencies are not generated.</li>
<li>The 22 pF is added for  stability and may be eliminated depending on the transistor types and circuit  layout. A larger value may be needed in some cases.</li>
<li>The output is ground  referenced with no DC  offset.</li>
<li>A load change may  require readjustment of the feedback potentiometer.</li>
<li>The series RC may be  switched if it is desired to have the resistors connected together.</li>
<li>A high gain transistor  like the MPSA-18 for the first transistor will allow a much larger value for R,  up to 1 Megohm.</li>
<p align="left">The circuit should  draw between 18 and 45 mA, a value determined by the transistor gain and the  value of R. Current outside of this range may cause distortion. The 1.2 k  emitter resistor may be varied slightly to adjust the current consumption; shoot  for 25 to 30 mA.</p>
<p align="justify">It should be noted  that op-amps make great Wien bridge oscillators without significant impedance  and bias concerns! There are dozens on the web and in manufacturers&#8217; application  notes. But sometimes a couple of friendly transistors fit the bill  perfectly.</p>
